Obituary of Roland "Doc" Richard

Roland "Doc" Richard, 81, of Moncton, NB, passed away o n Saturday, June 17, 2017. Born in Charlottetown, PEI, he was the son of the late Arthur and Lottie (Keenan) Richard. Doc began his engineering career in high school, driving around with Bill Crandall in his car, which served as Bill’s office at the time. He studied at St. F. X. and Dal and continued his career with W. H. Crandall & Associates Limited (now Crandall Engineering) in Moncton, retiring as President of that company after more than 50 years. He was a proud life member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick and the American Water Works Association. Chances are if your child played hockey in the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s in Riverview, you crossed paths with Doc at the rink. During those decades, he coached not only his own boys, but hundreds of others. Doc was an avid athlete, having played hockey from high school to the "old-timers" league and everything in between. He passed along his passion, knowledge and love the game to many, many young athletes. He was one of the founding fathers of Riverview minor hockey and nothing gave Doc more pleasure than to see these young boys develop into fine young men. Even in recent years, he had visits from his former players, who loved to catch up with Doc and discuss the latest playoff scores. All Montreal Canadian fans welcome!! Of all his accomplishments, his family was his greatest joy. Doc was one of those "home every night at 5" kind of guys, and supper was always on the table. He was devoted to Evie, his loving wife of 60 years, and his children, grandchildren and great-children (who affectionately called him Grumpy). Despite being a homebody, he was always up for a trip to his beloved island, PEI, or Margaree, Cape Breton. One of his most memorable trips was to Russia to attend the games of the Canada Russia series in 1972. This quiet, unassuming giant of a man had a heart to match. He never sought the limelight, quite the contrary. He would likely be upset by the length of this obituary, but it is hard to keep it short when we know how many people were touched by his kindness, generosity of spirit and love of community. Survived by his loving wife and best friend of 60 years Evelyn (MacDonald); three daughters: Linda Richard of Charlottetown, Carol Garland (Keith) of Moncton and Claudia Richard of South Korea; two sons, Roland Richard (Paula) of Dawson Settlement and John Paul Richard (Denyse) of Riverview; daughter-in-law Karla Richard; Grandchildren, Darick & Darin, Marshall, Leiland & Halle, Kris, Karen & David, and great -grandchildren, Carter & Maya, Kaleigh & Hannah, and Owen & Wyatt, Damien & Ryder; two sisters Shirley Doucette (late Art) of Charlottetown, Betty Randall (Pete) of Blackville; sister-in law, Gloria Richard, brother-in law, Norman Richard, In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a son David Richard in 2015; sisters, Pat Hennessey, Barb Richard and Janet Deware; brothers, John, Eugene ("Toots") and Mickey Richard.
