Obituary of Charles Donald Laity

Don Laity, age 86 years of Riverview, passed away after a short illness on March 18th, 2009 at the Moncton Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cornwall, England on May 14th, 1922, he was the son of the late Walter and Inez (Yates) Laity. His family emigrated to Chatham, NB in 1928 and farmed there until moving to Moncton in 1946. Don joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Supply Technician in 1940 serving at several stations in Canada until the end of the war. He worked for General Dairies, Moncton Ice and Coca Cola for several years before rejoining the RCAF in 1955 and serving until retirement as a sergeant in 1972. He then worked CFB Moncton as a civilian until retiring at age 65 in 1987. A long service Royal Canadian Legion member of 35 years, Don was also an avid dart player, bowler, crib player, Moncton Wildcats hockey fan, and expert yodeler to all his children and grandchildren. Proud father and much loved step father of sons Stephen Laity of Riverview, Richard (Linda) Laity of Fredericton, Barry (Sue Smidt) Laity of Riverview, Wayne (Shelly Beers) McMullen of Riverview; daughters Shelia (Bruce) Chapman of Saint John, Claudette (Jeremy) McMullen of Dartmouth, Pauline (Rod) Manderson of Ottawa, Lauraine (Victor Fiander) McMullen of Bridgewater, Cheryl (Harold Welch) McMullen of Dartmouth; brother Walter (Helen) of Riverview; 11 grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his first wife Theresa Kelleher in 1977 and second wife Laura McMullen in 1999; sisters Beryl (Bliss) Wheelhouse, Pauline (Les) Smith, and Dorothy (Carl) Schofield. Visitation will be held from the Riverview Funeral Home on Friday, March 20th, 2009 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00pm. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #6 will be holding a veteran's service at 6:45pm. The funeral service will be held from the Riverview Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 21st, 2009 at 10:00am with Rev. Aaron Billard officiating. Interment will take place in Fairhaven Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of Don, made to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by his family.
