Obituary of William George Reid

We announce the death of William George (Bill) Reid, on Saturday, October 6th, 2007 at The Moncton Hospital. Bill was born on April 14, 1929 in Timmins, On; the elder son of Gilbert and Helen Reid. He did most of his schooling in Ontario, but when the family moved to Sydney, NS; he finished his last year of high school at Sydney High. He attended Dalhousie University, where he met his future wife, Barbara Lohnes, and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. He then went on to further studies and became a professional chartered accountant. In his professional capacity he worked first for Nightingale-Hayman in Sydney before going to work with Reevy, Blackmore, Burnham, Laws and Page in Fredericton. He was transferred from the Fredericton office to Moncton in 1962. From 1962 until his retirement, Bill worked in Moncton as a chartered accountant, first with Reevy, then with H. R. Doane, and then finally as an independent CA. When he wasn't busy with accounting, Bill was a strong supporter of Kiwanis International, being past Lt. Governor, a life long member, and a past president of the local club, where he achieved over thirty five years of perfect attendance. He was instrumental in bringing the first Kiwanis Boat Show to the Moncton area. He was also a member and past president of the Moncton City Club. While accounting might have been his first love, in his middle years, fishing became his vocation. Hours were spent tying flies, and going salmon fishing on the Miramichi and trout fishing in Albert County. He greatly enjoyed his outings with his fishing friends. In his later years he also re-discovered a childhood love of stamp collecting, and spent many hours either trying to find the "right" stamp, or showing off the ones he had managed to find. As a younger man, Bill introduced his daughters to a love of boating, and many hours were spent at the family cottage in Edgewater sailing, and water skiing. BBQ's were also the order of the day, and many gatherings were held for friends and family, with Bill being the "chief BBQ cook". He also encouraged his daughters in their varied endeavours and loved to hear them sing. Bill was a strong supporter of St. Paul's United Church and was made a honorary elder in 2004. He was known for chairing very short meetings, especially during football season! In 2001, Bill had a heart valve replacement in Saint John and while he recovered well at the time, there were increasing health problems in the ensuing years. However, he maintained and optimistic outlook, and enjoyed outings as he was able. He leaves to mourn his wife of 54 years Barbara (nee Lohnes), his daughters Debbie, Peggy (Dennis Single), Lori (Wayne McKnight) and his much loved grandchildren Nikki and Christopher. He is also survived by his sister in law Janet Spence and her family, sister in law Mona and Ernest Walford and family; and brother in law Eric and Charlotte Lohnes and family. He was predeceased by his parents, his step-mother Tina Reid and his brother Fraser Reid. Visitation is at the Riverview Funeral Home Pine Glen Rd. on Monday, October 8, 2007 from 7 to 9pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul's United Church (Riverview) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 2:00pm with Rev. Steve Berube officiating.
