Obituary of Hubert P. Murphy

Hubert Patrick Murphy, 87 , passed away at The Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home Inc. on February 7, 2015 where he had been a resident since 2013. He was the son of the late Fred P. Murphy and the late Thelma Murphy (Ahearn). He was born in Moncton, September 29, 1927. He had attended Mary’s Home School, Mountain Road School and Queen Street School (St. Bernard’s). He had worked for the City of Moncton in the maintenance of its early fire alarm system when the alarm boxes were located on hydro polls and the central system was located at the former fire station on St. George Street. He then worked for the CNR Main Shops as a labourer and as a dining car porter on the passenger trains. In the 1950’s he moved to Toronto, ON and worked for Brown’s Bakery being a driver/salesman with horse and wagon delivering baked goods to homes. He remarked how the horse knew the route better then he did with the horse stopping at the various homes and knowing when to head back to the barn at the end of the day. He also worked for a Funeral Home while there. Upon his return to Moncton he obtained his Industrial Electrical Certificate from the Province of New Brunswick’s Department of Labour on November 9, 1971 and on June 29, 1972 he received his certificate for Electrical Construction. He became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1555. He was a past 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus while in Ontario. He worked on various construction projects in the Moncton area as well throughout the province. He went back to Ontario to work on construction and while there he obtained his Interprovincial certificate in Construction and Maintenance on November 21, 1987. He later worked at the trade in Alberta and British Columbia. He retired in the early 1990’s and would take his travel trailer to Florida to spend the winter months. In recent years he became a resident of Castle Manor and early in 2009 he had to move to Mazerolle Special Care Home because the New Brunswick Government closed the Manor. Later he was a long term patient at The Moncton Hospital He leaves to mourn special friend Margaret Leger and his sister Ann Caddell (Jim, deceased) Saint John, NB and half sisters Bernadette VanBuskirk (Gary), Maureen Murphy (Bill MacAdam), half brothers Gregory (Laura), Pat (Claire), Danny (Claudette), John (Rose) all of Moncton, Kevin (Sandra, deceased) Riverview and Neil (Sherrill) New Minas, NS, David (Theresa) Omaha, Nebraska. He was predeceased by his brother Raymond (Rita Boudreau, deceased) Kingston, ON and his sister Joan Larlee (Don, deceased) Aiken, South Carolina and step-mother Agnes. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Tuttle Brothers & Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Road, Riverview, NB with viewing on Tuesday, February 10 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral will be held from St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, 45 Botsford Street, Moncton, NB on Wednesday, February 11 at 10:00am with Reverend Allison S. Carroll, Priest Moderator conducting the service. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe, NB in the spring.
