Paul Hubert Sutherland of Riverview, NB passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at the age of 73. Born in Legers Corner (Dieppe), NB, he was the son of the late Hubert and Florence (Forbes) Sutherland. Paul is survived by his loving wife and soulmate Anna (Harris), sons Brent and Darren (Melissa) and grandchildren Aidan and Ainsley of Vancouver, BC, brother Robert (Karen) of Menlo Park, California,, and sister-in-law Susan Sutherland of Baden, ON. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Charlotte (Burditt) and brother Pierce. Paul was a "Man of the Sea". He served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy after graduating from Acadia University in 1963. He continued his career at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography and then served for thirty-five years with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He attended the National Defence College in Kingston, ON in a diplomat training program from 1982-83. He retired as Director General of the Central and Arctic Region (DFO) in 1995. Paul loved to sail and taught his sons, niece and nephews to sail at an early age. He was known to them as "The Commodore". Sailing to Shediac Island in search of goose tongue and samphire greens was a favorite summer pastime. Paul was also a fabulous cook and loved preparing delicious meals for family and friends. Paul was a great raconteur and delighted everyone with his wonderful stories and jokes. As he faced declining health in recent years, the family den became a gathering place filled with laughter and warmth. His positive attitude and good nature were an inspiration to all. The family would like to give special thanks to Doctors Daniel Landry, Ron Bourgeois, Troy Sitland and the nursing staff of The Moncton Hospital for their compassionate care through the years. Donations in Paul’s memory to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
