Obituary of Paul Vernon Whitmee

It is with a feeling of sadness and loss that the Family of Paul V. Whitmee announce his passing in the early hours on April 17th. Paul, with his wife Laura present , passed away in his home as he had wished. Paul faced the many challenges of Prostate Cancer since 2010 with strength and endurance. Paul was born in Guelph, Ontario on February 2nd, 1948, the first born to Olive(Ollie)( Grainger) and Ralph Whitmee who predeceased him. Paul is survived by his loving family; wife of nearly 49 years, Laura (McNeish); daughter Beth of Calgary, Alberta; son Jonathan( Arlene Mendoza) of Pemberton BC and the " Apple of his eye" grandson, John David " JD"; brother Peter( Sharon) of Antigonish N.S. ; sister Jayne ( Eric) Willden of Riverview. Paul is also survived by his God- daughter , Sarah ( Willden) Doherty of Sussex Corner and God-son John Lindsay- Botten of Halifax Nova Scotia as well as much loved nieces and nephews, cousins across Canada. The Whitmee Family moved from Collingwood , Ontario to Middle Sackville N.B. in the late fifties due to work availability for Ralph. Moving into Sackville soon after and then to Moncton N.B. The time spent in Sackville for Paul forged many memories and life long friendships. Paul, being a "baby boomer" thrived on the life of the sixties. Neighbourhood outdoor ice rinks , the " old Stadium, summer baseball fields , road hockey and being a part of the Moncton Y.M.C.A. All of these and the influence of the "Y" contributed to the person Paul became. An honour for Paul was being named " Boy of the Year" at the "Y" in 1961. Educated in the local schools and graduating from Moncton High School in 1966, Paul again participated and played hockey for M.H.S. Being a part of the Provincial winning team, was a highlight and special memory for Paul. Paul attended and graduated from Mount Allison University- graduating in 1970. Paul enjoyed his four years at Mt. A playing hockey, and earning his Engineering Certificate, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees. Paul began teaching in 1970 at NBCC in Moncton and was a part of the Civil Technology Department for 34 years. Paul had many interests in his " Life well lived ". Hockey and any sport one could imagine were his " loves". From golfing in Myrtle Beach and Banff, skiing in Maine, Whistler and Banff and points in between, sailing in Shediac and to P.E.I. crewing with brother Peter and in - law John. Paul played hockey with the Sackville Combines and was inducted into the Sackville Sports Wall of Fame, enjoyed many memories as a Moncton Dynomite player as well. His golfing included times at Maplewood and later at The Moncton Golf Club where he had a " hole in one " on the 8th hole. Paul believed in "giving back" and gave his time to coaching hockey, softball, lifeguarding and serving as President for the N.B. Speed Skating Association. The Riverview Club honoured Paul as a "Volunteer of the Year". His interests included "Toastmasters" and he enjoyed many years where he earned his "Distinguished Toastmaster" award. Paul's retirement years were filled with travelling with Laura to many parts of Canada and the United States in their R.V. Many wonderful memories, friendships shared were experienced. Paul and Laura are thankful for all of the support, love and caring given by Family and Friends, near and far through this journey he has been on. The Church Family of Central United Church , Moncton / Ministry and Congregation have always " been there". We are grateful. Visitation will be held at Tuttle Brothers and Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. A Celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 7:00pm at the Central United Church, 150 Queen St. Moncton, NB with a light reception to be held immediately following the service.
