Obituary of Harry Arnold Baxter

Harry Arnold Baxter, poet,musician and military man, died peacefully at the Moncton Hospital on June 26 at the age of 85. Although he spent his last few years living, writing, dancing and singing in the community of Riverview, Harry was born and raised along the beautiful shores of Black River, Saint John where he and his 7 siblings shared many happy memories. Harry graduated from Saint John High in 1950 and immediately began a career in Finance with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Digby, NS and then later in Fredericton,NB. When a call for adventure overtook him in 1958, Harry joined the Airforce where he served in isolated posts throughout northern Canada until his retirement 18 years later. Harry could always be seen with a little notebook or scrap of paper and loved to document the events of daily life both momentous and mundane. He had a quick wit and a knack for poetry and has been published in Canadian and international Compendiums of Poetry. He was also a Distinguished Member of the International Society of Poets. In addition to writing, Harry had a passion for music - particularly East Coast fiddlin’ - and played a mean accordion at any family gathering, as well as various local kitchen parties and events with his dear friends, the Maple Sugar Band. Harry is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Sophia; his daughter, Alana Korek; his brothers Nelson , Robert, Hollis and sister Phyllis Walker and brother-in-law Ed Walker. He will be deeply missed by his loving companion Jean, son Ian, and grandchildren Nirvana Korek and Dusty Korek. Harry is also survived by his loving sister Louise MacCallum ( Ron ). Brothers John and Winston ( Hannah-Laurie ), sisters-in-law Jean, Bing, and Ernie, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends too numerous to list but fondly remembered. As per Harry’s wishes there will be no visitation. Immediately following a brief graveside ceremony by Rev. Douglas Painter at the All Saints Anglican Church Cemetery, Clifton Royal, NB at 1 pm on Sunday June 30th, a Celebration of Harry’s Life will be held at the home of Paul and Kelly Baxter. Everyone who remembers him is asked to celebrate Harry in their own way - we like to think he’s at that big kitchen party in the sky, tapping his foot and pumping his squeezebox ’til the cows come home to the Homestead where the Black River 8 grew up. Raise a glass or sing a favourite tune - we’re sure he’ll be smiling down at us.
