Obituary of Rosemary Edna Farnell
The peaceful death of Rosemary Edna Farnell (Galbraith), 88, occurred on December 15, 2020 at the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville, NB where she received excellent care since 2015. Born in Saint John, NB to the late Sandy and Nellie Anderson, she graduated from nursing school in 1953 and soon married William "Bill" Galbraith. Over the next eight years they had four children: Greg, Pat, Susan and Peter and relocated to Moncton. In1964 Bill died suddenly of a heart attack leaving Rose with the daunting task of raising young children while working full-time at the Moncton Hospital. She weathered her kid’s teen years with the help of her much loved mother-in-law, Florence Galbraith, many friends, St Pat’s Family Center, and her sheer determination and quick-witted humour. In 1975 she married William Herbert Farnell and enjoyed an especially happy marriage until Herb’s death in 2015. Rose loved being a nurse and the simple things in life. She relished a meal of rare roast beef and red wine, family gatherings at the Parlee Beach cottage that usually went far into the next morning, sizzling in the sun drenched in baby oil, and girl-time with her dear friends Marina, Toby and Ruth. Rose embraced life at the Drew, and even when Alzheimer’s robbed her of almost all memory, she never lost her graciousness, even though it took effort when every visitor became a stranger.
Rose is survived by her sister Thelma Carpenter (Murray), sons Greg (Jean), Peter (Mary), daughter Susan, step-daughter Anne Baker, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, in-laws George and Florence Galbraith, brother Boyd (Lois), husbands Bill and Herb, son Pat (Brenda), and stepson-in-law Jim Baker.
