Obituary of Michael James Smith
Michael James Smith of Lower Coverdale, NB passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Monday, August 8, 2022 at the age of 71. Born in Moncton, NB he grew up in nearby Lower Coverdale, the son of Kathleen Smith and the late James Smith.
Warm, friendly and with a great enthusiasm for life, Michael touched many people with his outgoing personality, and he cared deeply for his family and wide circle of friends.
After leaving the Department of Transportation where he worked for several years, he became a full-time cattle farmer and woodsman and was a hard worker.
A born entertainer, Michael loved to make people laugh with his funny stories, always the life of the party. Big-hearted and kind, he was known for his generous nature, always eager to help others. He also loved to sing and play his guitar, had written several songs and was an excellent dancer.
Michael was an outstanding horseman, and he passed his great love of horses on to his niece, Carla. He cattle penned in years past (Southern New Brunswick Cattle Penning Club), was enormously proud of his 1999 all-around winning buckle (with team members Paul Reynolds (decd) and Larry Matchett [decd]), and was usually in the money with any number of gymkhana sports, and woodsmen’s competitions.
He was a member of the Lower Coverdale Baptist Church.
He is survived by his two sons, Adam (Jamie) of Lower Coverdale, and Aaron (Kendra) of Saskatoon, SK; grandchildren Brettly, Mackenzie, Myla and Jaslynn; his mother, Kathleen Smith, brothers David, Paul and Lloyd, sisters Linda and Tanya, several nieces and nephews, and his partner of 21 years, Linda.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held at the Wilmot Cemetery, Lower Coverdale at 12 Noon, Thursday, August 11th, with reception to follow at 12:30 at Tuttle Brothers & Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Rd., Riverview, NB, (506) 857-9544
