Obituary of Russell Alderson
Peacefully at the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre in Ottawa on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the age of 97. Son of Frances (Young) and James Alderson. Russell was predeceased by his beloved wife Catherine (Beddow), his son Russell (Butch) and his daughter Celestine. He is survived by his son Alan and daughters Colleen and Gina (Richard Gill), grandchildren Stacy, Carrie, Jennifer and Jessica, Devin and Aaron, and Nolan and Emma, and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Dolores Biddington and Vena Alderson.
Russell was born in Bras d’Or Bridge, Cape Breton, where he developed his love of the sea and his singular determination to build a prosperous life for his family. After serving in WWII he worked as a metal instructor ultimately at CN in Moncton, New Brunswick. He then took up real estate and was a leading and successful broker in Moncton for many years.
Russell will be remembered most for his hard work and devotion to his wife Catherine. He got up every morning before school during the season to empty the lobster traps and take them around Sydney Mines in a wheelbarrow to sell. In his earlier married years he built his own house in the evening after coming home from work. Later in life, he spent hours every day maintaining his property once work was done. In his 80s Russell took up golf and bridge and enjoyed both for many years.
