Obituary of Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Steeves

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Steeves of Riverview, born August 25, 1936 in Hillsborough, the eldest of four children of the late Honourable Percy Hugh Steeves and Constance (Richards) Steeves. Elizabeth left home to attend the University of New Brunswick in 1954. While an undergraduate, she joined the University Reserve Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and after graduation was posted in Nottinghamshire, England. Travelling through Europe sparked her lifelong love of travel, and her special affinity for Greece. She returned to Canada in 1959. Elizabeth was a devoted high school teacher, librarian and special educator for 35 years. During that time, she taught in Campbellton, Sackville, Petitcodiac and Salisbury. Throughout southeastern New Brunswick, she could be seen proudly sporting her metallic blue Mustang. Elizabeth was committed to giving back to her community, beginning a student bursary and donating to many community causes. She loved children’s stories and family history, and as an avid CBC radio listener was well versed in world events. Elizabeth had an infectious laugh and was never afraid to share her opinions. While her favourite colour was yellow, she also had a penchant for purple – her hair colour of choice at least one high school reunion. Elizabeth’s family, both close and extended, was very dear to her. She was unceasingly loving to her brothers, their children and grandchildren, cherishing their visits, and kept in touch with her many cousins. She also maintained close friendships that spanned decades. Elizabeth was predeceased by her brother Hugh Richards (Dick) Steeves. She is survived by brothers Maxwell Steeves and Lester Steeves, as well as five nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews, and will be deeply missed by them all. Thanks goes to Nancy and Mo Mercier and their family who were devoted to Elizabeth and she to them. We are also grateful to the care providers who lovingly supported Elizabeth.
