Obituary of Phyllis M. Rice
HARRIS-RICE, PHYLLIS MAE – 101, of Moncton, NB and formerly of Bear River, NS passed away peacefully at the Moncton Hospital on March 14, 2010. Born September 15, 1908 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire she was the daughter of the late Dilvert and Nellie (Paige) Darres. Phyllis’ mother drowned tragically in a boating accident when Phyllis was just 1 ½ years old and her father brought her to Bear River, NS where she was raised by her grandmother. Phyllis lived in Bear River until she was 100 when she came to Moncton, NB to live with her granddaughter Juli and family. Phyllis and her first husband operated a general store in Bear River for many years. Phyllis was a member of the Bear River United Baptist Church, the Eastern Star, and the New Horizons. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting and made many beautiful sweaters, mittens, afghans, and quilts for her family and friends. Phyllis will be sadly missed by her son Donald Harris (Diane) of Ottawa, ON, grandchildren Juli Mullen (Bruce) of Moncton, Deborah Cooley (Stephen) of Burlington, ON, William Harris (Sharon) of Barrie, ON, Elizabeth Russell (Calvin) of Pickering, ON, David Harris (Claire) of Milton, ON, Dan Harris (Pam) of Esquimalt, BC, and 9 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her first husband, Clayton Harris (1960), second husband Thomas Rice (1979), son Walter (1952), and son Richard (2000). In keeping with Phyllis’ wishes, cremation has taken place, with a private ceremony and burial to take place at a later date at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bear River, NS.
