Obituary of Douglas Lee Keirstead

Douglas Lee Keirstead passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his residence, on Wednesday, January 18 at the age of 104. Born on January 15, 1919 in Coles Island, NB, he was the youngest son of the late W. Judson and E. Blanche Keirstead. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Stewart, his son, Wallace (Carolyn) Keirstead, his grandchildren, Zachary (Julie), Vanessa (Michael), Ian (Veronique) and Heather (Curtis). He is also survived by his step-daughters, Beverly (Eric) Thompson, Cheryl (Graden) Young, step-grandchildren, Derek (Marina), Danny (Tanisha), Neil (Talia), Jocelyn (Jonathan), Catherine (Gregory) and 17 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and one sister-in-law, Leota Sullivan. He was predeceased by his first wife Stella M. Fawcett, his second wife, Helen M. Waite Feeney, his brother, Manford (Marjorie), sisters Eretta (Arthur) McLean and Rosa (Charles) Crowe, son-in-law, Terrill Stewart and several nieces and nephews. Doug served in the Canadian Army - Lord Strathcona Horse for 5 years during WWII, seeing action in Italy and Western Europe. He returned to a career in transportation in Sussex, Saint John and Beaver Harbour, retiring from Gulf Oil after 27 years. He was a devout member of Christ Church, Pennfield and a member of the Legion Branch #39. He enjoyed trailering, golf, crafts and especially winters in Florida. He was renowned for the 40+ blankets he decorated with Swedish weaving which he gave generously to family and friends. A life long animal lover he had several horses and many beloved dogs. Doug was always a joy to be with because of his legendary storytelling. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 23rd at 11am at St. George’s Anglican Church in Moncton, with The Reverend Canon Chris VanBuskirk officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens, Saint John. The family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at the Veterans Health Centre in Moncton for their wonderful loving care of Doug during his three years at the residence. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
