Obituary of Susan Jane Balcom

Susan Jane Balcom passed away on March 1st, 2023. Born in Moncton NB on March 15, 1952 Sue was the second child of John (Jack) Ambrose and Annie May (Delaney) Balcom. Sue developed type one diabetes at the age of 3. While this diagnosis helped to define Sue’s life, her parents worked hard to make sure that it did not limit her possibilities, and they instilled in Sue the belief that she was able to do many things. She always said, "Don’t tell me what I can’t do, let me figure out how I can do it," and she usually did. Sue attended Hillcrest Elementary school and Harrison Trimble High School, then Acadia University. She was very involved in campus life at Acadia, working on Radio Acadia and Frosh Week committees, Musicadians, as well as being a residence don. Following graduation, she returned to Moncton. She l decided to follow her mother’s footsteps graduating from AJ McMaster School of Nursing. She worked at the Moncton Hospital on the float team and the psychiatric unit until her retirement. Sue was very involved in her community through Saint James Anglican Church, serving as a lay reader and as an active participant in the Anglican Women’s Auxiliary. She was a past Chief of the Pythian Sisters. Sue loved to travel, with family and friends, enjoying many trips across Canada, Europe , Australia New Zealand and the Caribbean. Sue is survived by her brother John Patrick (Pat) (Jeanne) Balcom, Dieppe, NB and sister Judith (Judy) Ann (Russell) Dulong, Port Williams NS., nephew John (Deb Bates) Dulong and nieces, Kelsie- Ann Balcom, Alisha Lynn Balcom , Kathryn (Bevan) Comeau and step niece Ann Richard, as well as great nieces and nephew (Maelyn and Jack Caissie, Annabelle and Maddie LeBlanc, Grace Peck) Family wishes to thank the staff of McNair Manor and The Moncton Hospital for the compassionate care Sue received during this difficult time. Donations in Sue’s memory can be made to the charity of choice.
