Obituary of Joseph "Joe" Martin Doherty

Joseph "Joe" Martin Doherty, 92, of Riverview, passed away peacefully at the Moncton Hospital on Wednesday, July 18, 2007. Born in Waterford, Kings Co. NB, he was the son of the late Hugh and Catherine (O'Leary) Doherty. Prior to his retirement he worked with various construction companies though out Atlantic Canada, HMCS Coverdale and # 5 Supply Depot Moncton. He was a founding member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Riverview. Joe was also a member of the Bridgedale Seniors. He was a veteran of W.W.II having served five years with the Royal Canadian Army Engineers overseas and was present for the liberation of Holland. He was a long standing of the Riverview Veterans and Armed Forces Association. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, gardening, travel, politics and his Irish heritage. His greatest love was that of his family. Joe also had a strong affection for his wonderful neighbours and his community. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Marion E. (McMackin) Doherty; his loving children Honourable Dr. Ed Doherty (Mary) Saint John, Jo-Ann Thorburn (Ray) Calgary; Karen LeBlanc (Paul) New Maryland, Margie Lamb (Peter) Halifax and Frances Doherty Riverview; twelve adoring grandchildren Teresa Caplice (Michael), Robert Hynes (Beth), Catherine Hynes-Doherty, Andrew Thorburn, Annie Thorburn, Jill Thorburn, Derek LeBlanc, Corey LeBlanc, Darci LeBlanc, Meghan Lamb, Kealin Lamb and Sarah Lamb; four great grandchildren Dennis, Samuel, Sophie and Layla Caplice; three sisters Bernie Yerxa Sussex, Helen Carroll Kitchener, and Sr. Pauline Doherty (Our Lady Missionaries) Toronto; one brother Bill Doherty Ottawa; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A loving and caring, husband, father, grandfather (Grampie), brother and friend to all he will be sadly missed. Besides his parents he was predeceased by eight siblings Margaret Layden, Catherine Fallon, Agnes Fallon, Frank, Nat and Walter Doherty, Nora Kelly and Frances Fulton. Resting at Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview with visitation on Thursday, July 19th, 2007 from 7 to 9 pm and Friday, July 20th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Fatima Dr. Riverview, Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 9:30am with Fr. Phil Mulligan officiating. The Riverview Veteran's Association will hold a service at the Riverview Funeral Home, Friday evening at 6:45 pm. Parish prayers will follow at 8:30pm. Interment will be in Our Lady of Calvary Roman Catholic Cemetery in Dieppe, NB Donations in Joe's memory made to the charity of the donors choice would be appreciated.
