Obituary of John Edward Wood
Heaven has gained a musical angel. After a short but courageous struggle Eddie has passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends at the Moncton Hospital on Thursday, April 16th, 2009 as a result of complications from lung disease.
Eddie was a kind and gentle man with a heart as big as life. A friend to everyone, he was always willing to give of himself freely whenever needed no matter what was asked of him and expected nothing in return.
Born in Newcastle on July 11th, 1941, he was the eldest child of the late Herbert and Annie (Lumsden) Wood.
He was a wonderful dad who passed on his love for the finer things in life to his children. He will be deeply missed by his son Randy (Rhonda) Wood of Lake Echo, NS; grandsons Matthew Hoar (Lizzy Theriault) of Ottawa, ON, and Justin Hoar of Lake Echo, NS. The mother of his children Jeane Wood of Saint John and the Doiron family will miss him. His youngest son, Stephen predeceased him in 1994.
He was a special brother to Freddie (Stella), Tommy (Marcia), Howard (Kathy), Valorie Johnson (Ken McLaggan), Barry (Velma), Craig, Timmy (Joy) all of Moncton; Sharon Morrison (Dave) of Prince George, B.C; Brenda McQuinn (Mike) of Upper Coverdale and Jeff (Kim) of Lower Sackville. He was predeceased by his brother David in 1987, but is fondly remembered by his sister in law Bonnie Steeves.
He will be missed by his adopted family: Allan Harris (the late Ferne), Kevin and Shirley Simkins and especially by his “best friend” Mary Harris. “Uncle Ed” had a very special love for Scott and Gracie Simkins who he asked about right up until the end.
His aunts and uncles as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins will also miss him.
Eddie started his career as a Carman Apprentice at Canadian National Railways in 1959 and retired in 1996 as a Technical Officer in the Mechanical Car Department at Gordon Yard. He was also a member of the CN Pensioners Association.
Ed is well known around the Moncton area for his musical talent and was known as “one of the best”. His friends at the weekly jam sessions will miss him. He also loved to read, paint, and garden.
He was the president of the Condo Association at 50 Trites Road where he will be missed by “his flock” of girls.
A very tender hearted person, Eddie loved animals. He was often called by people he didn’t know to assist with a pet behavioral problem or just to give advice. His cats Simon and Baxter will miss their “dad”.
For those who wish to remember Eddie, donations to the Moncton SPCA would be appreciated by his family.
A time of memory sharing with the family will be held at the Riverview Funeral Home (214 Pine Glen Road, Riverview) on Saturday, April 18th, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9pm.
A celebration of Eddie’s life will be held at the Allison Baptist Church (Salisbury Road, Moncton) on Sunday, April 19th, 2009 at 3pm with Pastor David Morehouse officiating.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Riverview Funeral Home (214 Pine Glen Road, Riverview NB. 857-9544).
