Obituary of Henry Mathias Sauer

Henry Mathias Sauer, formerly of Moncton, passed away at the Dr. V.A. Snow Center in Hampton, NB on Saturday, June 19, 2010. Born in Weinbach, West Germany on February 23, 1922, he was one of five sons (Albert, Henry, Ernst, Werner, Theo) to Heinrich and Lena Sauer. He had one sister, Helen of California and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was also the only son to have spent his life in Canada, although a part of him always remained in his homeland. Henry received his patisserie training in Europe and came to Canada in 1953, where he worked all his life as a pastry chef in various hotels in the Atlantic provinces as well as Toronto. During his career, he served and met dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II, and former Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Lovingly remembered by his twin daughters, Sylvia Smith (Keith) of Riverview and Sonya Stephen (Michael) of Hampton; daughters, Deborah Van Zealand (Craig) of Riverview and Bettina Sieben (Gunther) of Germany; only son, Derrick (Lois) Sauer of Ajax, ON; son-in-law, Reg (June) Smith of Moncton; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his cherished wife of 51 years, Reta (Wilton) Sauer in 2005; daughter, Heidi; son-in-law, John; great-grandaughter, Rachael; nephew, Peter; sister, Helen and brothers. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Tuttle Bros. Funeral Home, 171 Lutz Street Moncton, NB (506) 857-8564. where visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 2-4 pm, and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church (51 Church St., Moncton) on Wednesday, June 23rd at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Chris VanBuskirk officiating. Interment will take place in Elmwood Cemetery. In memory of Henry, donations made to the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated by his family.
