Obituary of Henry William Jones

Henry passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 8, 2016, at the Erickson Personal Care Home. Henry was predeceased by his wife Alice. He is survived by his brother Norman (Ruth); children John (Shawn) and grandsons Caleb and Joshua; Jennifer; James (Kathryn); and Dan; as well as many nieces and nephews and their respective families. Henry attended Moncton High School, Success Business College, and Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He then decided to head out West and in 1947 he arrived in Winnipeg. In 1949-1950, Henry attended Normal School teacher training in Winnipeg. Over the years Henry taught in a number of rural schools, and in 1953 he began teaching at the Islay School in Vista. This is where he met Alice Sydor, who was also teaching in the same school. They married in 1960, and together they lived and taught school in various places throughout Manitoba, including Cranberry Portage, Little Black River First Nation, and Amaranth. During this time, Alice earned her B.A. and Henry earned his B.A. and B.Ed from the University of Manitoba. Henry taught Phys Ed in Amaranth, and he greatly enjoyed driving his high school students to various sporting events in his big green station wagon. Henry was actively involved in the Canadian Sunday School Mission Church in Amaranth, and especially enjoyed teaching adult Sunday School classes about end times biblical prophecy from the books of Daniel and Revelation. While in Amaranth, Alice encouraged Henry to pursue his life-long desire to become a pastor. The family moved to Otterburne in 1976 so Henry could attend Providence Seminary. He graduated from Providence Seminary with his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) in 1979, and then accepted the pastorate of the Baptist Church in Ignace, Ontario. After serving as pastor in Ignace, Henry accepted a position driving a bus, transporting miners to and from the local mine each day. Since Henry loved to drive, this was a position he greatly enjoyed. In 1989, Henry and Alice received the call to the pastorate of Hilltop Baptist Church in Erickson. In 1992, after a long battle with cancer, Alice passed away at the age of only 60 years. Henry continued to pastor until he retired in 2000 at the age of 75. The Jones family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to everyone at Hilltop Baptist Church for their many kindnesses to Henry and the entire family over the years. After his retirement in 2000, Henry moved to Minnedosa. He continued to enjoy driving, his favorite pastime. He would often drive out to the east coast to visit his brother Norman and sister-in-law Ruth in New Brunswick. He greatly enjoyed these trips and spoke of them often. Henry was pleased when he was asked to participate in a TV program for Minnedosa’s public access station, contributing to a TV program that included Henry’s favorite subject of biblical prophecy. In January 2010, Henry moved to the Townview Manor in Minnedosa. In October 2013, he moved to the Erickson Personal Care Home. The Jones family would like to sincerely thank everyone in the communities of Minnedosa and Erickson for all the kindness and support they showed to Henry over the years. Henry lived a long and full life – 90 years – and we are thankful for the many years we had with him. We are thankful that he is now reunited with Alice in heaven.
