Obituary of Russell “Russ” G. Read

Russell "Russ" G. Read, 88, of Moncton, passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, December 11, 2009. Born in Harrington Harbour, PQ. on August 29, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Grace (Ransom) Read. He was a member of St. Philip's Anglican Church, 30 Lynch St. Moncton. Russ was a Engineer, retiring with 36 years service with the Department of Transport, he was project manager for the construction of the Air Traffic Control Center in Riverview among many other duties. After his retirement he worked an additional 3 years on the Zapata Ugland Oil Rig. He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers NB and was wireless Radio Operator 1st Class. At the age of 17, Russell went to sea and was shipwrecked during the hurricane of 1938 off East Hampton, Long Island. Afterward, he joined the Merchant Marines and served in W.W.II on the M/S Tijuca from October 1940 to January 1941, which was mined and had to limp back to England. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 54 years Marguerite B. Read; his sons William "Bill" Read (Melanie) of Fredericton and David Read (Catherine) of South Portland, ME USA; and by his sister-in-law Joan Stuart of Amherst, NS. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a infant brother William. By request there is no visitation at the Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 30 Lynch St. Moncton, on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev. Fr. Kevin Borthwick officiating. Interment will be in Amherst Cemetery, Amherst, NS. in the spring. Donations in memory of Russ made to the Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation or to the charity of the donors choice would be appreciated by his family.
