Obituary of Ian George Patterson

Ian George Patterson of Upper Coverdale, NB, husband of Noëlla E. Richard, died at his residence on Monday, November 28, 2011 at the age of 89 years. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on September 6, 1922, he was the son of Major Frank L. Patterson and Estelle (Bryant) both of Kingston. He volunteered for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and left Jamaica in June of 1941, enlisting in England in August 1941 and following training in England and in South Africa as an Air Navigator, Bomber and Air Gunner, performed 38 operations on Boston and Mosquito fighter-bombers from October 1943 to August 1944 over Europe, he was discharged in January 1947 with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He returned to Jamaica in September 1946, then to Canada in November of 1946 where he resided ever since. Graduated from McGill University in 1950 and admitted to membership in the (then) Institute of Chartered Accountants of Quebec in 1953 and in the New Brunswick Institute in 1979, he was employed by the (then) Price Waterhouse of Montreal, (then) Canadian Pratt & Whitney of Longueuil, QC, thence by the Federal Dept. of Regional Economic Expansion in Ottawa, Fredericton and Moncton retiring in 1987 in Moncton. Co-Founder and Treasurer of the (then) Memorial Societies of Fredericton and later of Moncton he was president, treasurer and Director of the FSNA Branch 64 in Moncton and treasurer of the Riverview Veterans and Armed Services Association of Riverview, NB, and treasurer of the (then) Moncton Scottish Association, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.6 in Moncton; also a member of the Air Force Veterans Club in Moncton. He was one of the early members of PACE (People Alone Caring Enough) and held the board position of Parliamentarian and of Education Director. He also met his current widow Noella Richard at PACE in 1990. Besides his wife, Ian will be sadly missed by two daughters Linda Brytak (Alex) of Barrie ON, and Major Judy Patterson (Phillip Harris) of CFB Gagetown, NB; son Daniel (Carole Granger) of Montreal; five grandchildren Jordan, Martyn, Tristan (Lauren), Marie Ann Thérèse and Angélique; two sisters Virginia Spicer of Saint Donat, QC, Joan McLaughlin of Tampa, FL, and one brother Robert of Tarrytown, NY; also by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by 3 siblings, first Lt. Leslie of the Devonshire Regiment and British Commando in Germany in 1946, then by Joyce (Tom Matthews) 79 and subsequently by Sgt. Alan 2005 of the Royal Canadian Artillery, wounded at Ortona, Italy in 1943 and invalided back to Canada. Also predeceased by his first wife Marie-Thérèse (Mary) Ascoli 1981, mother of his three children and grandmother of five surviving grandchildren, and one predeceased grandson Ryan Brytak 2010. Visitation will be held at the Riverview Funeral Home on Friday December 2, 2011 from 7:00pm-9:00pm. A funeral service will be held at Riverview Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday December 3, 2011 at 10:00am with Father Phil Mulligan officiating. The Riverview Veterans will be holding a prayer service prior to the funeral service at 9:45am. In Ian's memory, donations made to the Oncology dept of the G.L.
