Obituary of Hazen F. Smith

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Hazen F. Smith, husband of Marguerite (Girouard) Smith at Embassy Hall (Shannex) in Quispamsis NB on October 15, 2013. Hazen was born in Lower Newcastle on April 2, 1917 and he was the son of the late Albert and Margaret(MacDonald) Smith. He attended St. Thomas University where he was granted a Bachelor of Arts degree. After joining the Public Service, Correctional Services Branch, he attended Mount Allison University receiving university credits in psychology and sociology. During a 37 year career with Corrections Canada he served in several senior positions including Warden of Dorchester Penitentiary in N.B., Warden of Kingston Penitentiary in Ontario, Director of Inmate Training and Social Development at the Penitentiary headquarters in Ottawa, and Member of the National Parole Board for the Atlantic Region. He attended St. Bernard's Church in Moncton and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree assembly, the Federal Superannuates Association, former member of the Dorchester Lions Club, and the Sackville Rotary Club. He was a most devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and a tremendous example of his great faith to all who knew him. In addition to his wife, Marguerite, he is survived by a daughter Alyce (Clarence) Walsh, of Beaver Harbour, NB., a son Mark (Bonnie)Smith, of Ottawa, Ont., grandsons Richard of Moncton, Timothy of Beaver Harbour, and Christopher of Drummondville, PQ; and great grandchildren Lianne and Andy Walsh of Drummondville, PQ; as well as sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Hazen was predeceased by all of his siblings: two sisters, Sr. Alice Smith, and Margaret Howard, and brothers, Rev. James Smith, Leonard, Percy, Raymond, Harold and Reginald. He and Marg enjoyed round and square dancing and were members of clubs here and in Florida where they spent their winters. Playing bridge was also a favorite pastime in addition to other card games. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home by request. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church, Botsford St. Moncton, on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 1:00 pm with Fr. Allison Carroll as celebrant. A reception will be held in the Church Hall immediately following the service. We the family would like to thank the following: Fr. Don Breen, for his many visits and kindnesses, The Eucharistic Ministers from St. Mark's Church, Gloria Mahar from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, the Staff of Concord Hall and Sue Delong and the staff of Embassy Hall, Dr. Chris O'Brien, Mary Jane McAfee and Suzanne and all of the wonderful staff from the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital for caring for our husband and dad for 2 1/2 months. We also thank friends from Moncton for visiting and all who have been praying for dad during this past 2 year journey. We will be forever grateful to all of you. Donations in Hazen's memory made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a Charity of choice would be appreciated by the family. Interment will be at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery in Dieppe, NB.
