Obituary of Elsie May Walker

Elsie May Walker (née Hicks) born on July 15, 1922 in Salisbury NB, the youngest child of Seldon and Minnie (Eagles) Hicks. Elsie died peacefully, with loving family at her side, on September 17, 2014 in Monarch Hall, Riverview, after a brief illness. A graduate of Moncton High School, Elsie attended Normal School in Fredericton and taught for six years in Gallagher Ridge, Harrisville and Salisbury. She studied Christian Education at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. In 1949, she married William (Bill) John Walker of Gunningsville, NB (formerly of London, England). As a newly married couple with a swiftly growing family, Bill and Elsie became leaders in Christian outreach and evangelism and actively served with the Maritime Gospel Association and as deans of men and women at UBBTS, now Crandall University. Due to Bill's declining health in the 1960s Elsie briefly re-entered the teaching profession while continuing to run a busy household of eight children. She and Bill were faithful church members and inspired their children and grandchildren with their commitment and faith. After Bill's untimely death in 1974, Elsie raised the five children remaining at home on her own. Once her children had grown, Elsie devoted herself to Christian ministry. She influenced the lives of many through her pastoral care and discipleship of inmates at Dorchester Penitentiary. She led neighbourhood Bible studies for women, a ministry which she continued well into her eighties, first from her home and later in her seniors' residence. Elsie walked faithfully with her Lord and was sustained by his grace and strength even in death. Elsie was predeceased by her devoted husband Bill, her parents, and her siblings, Amy and Murdoch. She is survived by daughters Rebecca Campbell (James), Grace Eagles (Kim), and Eunice Schmidt (Martin); sons Lawrence Walker (Edith), Rand Walker (Anne), Daniel Walker (Valerie), David Walker and Grant Walker (Carolyn); 21 grandchildren and six great grand-children, as well as a nephew and nieces.
