Obituary of Gladys Edith Black

Gladys Edith Black (nee MacMillan), 95, our dear Aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2015 with her loving family by her side at Monarch Hall, Moncton. Born in 1920 at Black Point NB, Gladys was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Eva (Chalmers) MacMillan. Gladie graduated from the Miramichi Nursing School in 1942, specializing in labour and delivery, working in Ontario, NB, NS, and NFLD. She spent her life concerned for the well-being of others; baking goodies for friends, and knitting over 750 Christmas stockings that are hung in homes the world over. She was an ardent member of the Bicentennial Skating Club and Learn to Skate Program, skating well into her 80's. She was involved in many church activities at Mount Royal United Church and was honoured with a UCW life membership pin. Gladys leaves to mourn her brother Allison MacMillan of Bathurst, sister-in-law Jean MacMillan (Digby); nephews Jim (Gwen) MacMillan, Black Point and Lloyd (Dawn) Burbridge of BC; nieces Carolyn (Doug) Doiron of Ontario; Marilyn (Greg) Bush of Buffalo, Alison (John) Mangione of Florida; Elizabeth (Alan) Earl, BC; Sheila (late-Larry) Jack of Riverview; as well as 12 great-nephews and nieces including David (Donna) Jack and Katherine (Patrick) Arsenault of Riverview and 16 great-great-nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Willard Allison Black in 1986, her brothers Robert (RJ) of Buffalo and Lloyd of Black Point; sisters Margaret (Jack) LeMarquand, Isobel Bond, Muriel Burbridge, and Harriet Stratton; and nephew Larry Jack. The family would like to thank the staff of Camden Terrace, Canterbury Hall and Monarch Hall for the care and compassion shown to our dear Aunt. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gladys' memory may be made to Mount Royal United Church, 106 Mount Royal Blvd. Moncton, NB, E1E 2V2; or Chaleur (Bethel) United Church, c/o MacMillan Funeral Home, 221 Black Point Rd., Black Point, NB, E8G 1P9. A funeral service to celebrate Gladys’ life will be held at Tuttle Brothers and Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview on Tuesday, October 13th at 11:00 am, with a reception and visitation to follow. Committal will be held at New Mills Cemetery, New Mills, NB at a later date.
