Obituary of John Douglas Perkins

John Douglas Perkins, 69 years of Hampton, N.B. passed away with family by his side at the Saint John Regional Hospital following a sudden illness on July 22, 2017. Born in Sussex, N.B. he was the son of the late George and Helen (Berry) Perkins. John was very proud of his Quarter Horse farm Butternut Stables in Hampton, a stable that he had built from the ground up. He was a remarkable Horseman. As a coach and trainer he developed generations of horses and riders of all levels and had a profound impact on his students, not only instilling strong horsemanship skills he also taught life lessons along the way. John was instrumental in the development of the Quarter Horse industry as a whole. He was a member of the former NB Quarter Horse Breeders Association; He was on the Board of Directors on the Canadian Quarter Horse Association; Executive member of the Maritime Quarter Horse Association; member of the American Quarter Horse Association and was the recipient of the AQHA Professional Horseman Most Valuable Horseman in 2014. He was a visionary in the development of the Princess Louise Park Show Center in Sussex, N.B. He was a man of simple pleasures. His friends, his horse farm and his family were of utmost importance to him. He will be sadly missed by his wife Wendy (Gould) Perkins; daughter Beth (Rob) Upshall of Fawcett Hill; son Doug (Trina) Perkins of Havelock, step-son Jason (Terra) Routledge of Fredericton; his grandchildren who he was so proud of Hannah, Hali, Ashley, Brooklyn and Abby; sisters Margaret (Late Charles) Ryder of Havelock, Marilyn (Late Lloyd McCordic) of Killams Mills, Geraldine Brown of Sussex, and Diane (Ronald) Pigeon of Sault St. Marie, ON; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Reid's Funeral Home, 1063 Main St. Hampton, N.B. on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at the Hampton Senior Resource Center 31 Demille Ct. Hampton, N.B. with a reception to follow.
