Obituary of Arthur Nicholas Cormier

Arthur (Shrinner) Cormier, age 86 years of Foyer St. Thomas Nursing Home, Memramcook, and formerly of Cameron Arms, passed away peacefully on May 28th, 2009 with his family by his side. Born in Memramcook on September 10th, 1922, he was the son of the late Philias and Arthémise (LeBlanc) Cormier. Arthur was a parishioner of both St. Bernard’s and Holy Family Roman Catholic Churches. He graduated in 1943-44 from l’Université St-Joseph in Commerce where he later became the first Athletic Director for what later became Université de Moncton. He also received a Business degree from L’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in 1967. Arthur was a distinguished local hockey player with ‘Le club de hockey St Joseph’ as well as the Saint John Beavers and the USJ Moncton hockey team. He later coached many local Junior and Senior hockey teams along with the Mont-Laurier hockey club to a Québec League championship. He was also an accomplished baseball player, swimmer, acrobat and was a certified YMCA instructor which lead to his participation with volleyball, swimming and gymnastics teams for well over 20 years. Arthur was know as Memramcook’s first recreational directors as well as co-founder/instructor of the Memramcook Valley Minor Hockey and Minor Baseball Associations, founder of ‘Les Acrobats de Memramcook’ in the early 50’s where he conducted his troop of 45 acrobats while touring throughout Southeast NB at many local Festivals, and was also the Past-President of Toastmasters International where he received the highest honors at the Regional and National level for his accomplishments in the Francophone Chapter. In 1988, he was also honored as Tourism Ambassador by the Government of Canada. Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Patricia Lynch-Cormier; sisters Géraldine, Anita, Aline and Thérese Cormier all of St. Joseph, NB; brothers Aldoria (Jeannette) Cormier of Moncton and Henrie (Corinne) of Memramcook; special nephew Jacques Cormier and many other nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his baby sister Ella Cormier and brother Yvon. By personal request there will be no visitation or funeral service at the funeral home. A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. Donation’s in memory of Arthur made to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by his family.
