Obituary of Dr. Ann Smith
Dr. Ann Alberta Fulton MacLean Smith (née MacLean) passed peacefully in her sleep at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home on Friday, March 2nd, 2007. She was in her 83rd year.
Dr. Smith was born July 25, 1924 in Bartibog Bridge, New Brunswick of parents Thomas Alexander MacLean and Margaret Jane Sewell.
Ann spent a lifetime dedicated to teaching and learning.
She attended high school at St. Michael's Academy in Chatham New Brunswick. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees and her Master of Education (a magna cum laude) from the University of Moncton, New Brunswick. After retirement from her teaching career she studied towards and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Counselling from the Trinity Theological Seminary of Newburgh, Indiana. She first studied full time and then part time or by extension through most of her adult life while maintaining a career as an educator and while being a loving and devoted wife and mother.
Ann Smith taught in the New Brunswick school system for many years and provided hundreds of scholars with elementary and high school education. She will be remembered by elementary students from the Miramichi and Elgin areas. Graduates of Moncton High, Harrison Tremble High and Riverview High Schools will remember her as a mathematics and English teacher. Later she was an instructor for the teacher training and adult education programs of New Brunswick Community College. She also lectured in mathematics at Atlantic Baptist College. She imparted not only knowledge, but a sense of determined scholarship and achievement to her students. Colleagues will remember her as a dear friend.
In addition to a full career as an educator, in her retirement she began a second career. She first completed her doctorate then practiced as a Christian counselor. Dr. Smith was a longstanding member of the Moncton Wesleyan Church and was dedicated to the service of our Lord through her life and her work. She was a member of the Christian Writer's Guild and a contributing author to several Christian publications.
Ann will be dearly missed by her son, Ian George Smith and her daughter in-law Shauna Marion MacKenzie of Hamilton, Bermuda, and by her sisters Rita McQuinn of Penobsquis, New Brunswick and Violet Henderson of Nanaimo, British Columbia.
Married December 21st 1946 to George William Smith, she was widowed in 1983 and mourned her beloved husband for many years. She was also predeceased by her by her brothers Harry, Bernard, Earl and Andrew MacLean and by her sister Gertrude Douthwright.
A funeral will be held at the First Elgin Baptist Church, Thursday March 8th at 2:00pm. The service will be conducted by Rev. James Hammond, with message by Rev. John Bartol and a benediction by Rev. Gilmour MacKenzie. Visitation will be at the Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Rd, Riverview, New Brunswick on Wednesday March 7th, from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm.

Ann was a long term supporter of the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Society and New Brunswick Heart & Stroke Foundation.
