Obituary of Audrey Sybil Wood

Audrey Sybil Wood (Drayton), of Riverview, NB passed away at the Grass Nursing Home, on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the age of 90, after a long and courageous battle against Parkinson's disease. Born October 2, 1920 in Liverpool, England, she was the daughter of the late George and May (Tavener) Drayton. During WWII, Audrey was a motor transport driver in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, when she met and married Walter Donald Wood, Special Signals, Royal Canadian Air Force, of Thetford Mines, QC. After the war, they returned to Canada and lived in several cities, with the longest residency in Shawinigan, QC, where Walter was employed with Shawinigan Water and Power and Hydro-Quebec. In 1992, they moved to Riverview. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and active in the Order of Eastern Star and War Brides of Canada. Audrey was an avid gardener and determined to grow "English Roses" in Canada. Audrey loved to use local and healthy ingredients in her cooking, which could include anything that grew in her garden or yard. She is survived by two daughters Dawn (Art) Woodard of Haines, Alaska and Kathryn "Kathy" Merrill of Riverview; three sons David (Sylvia) of Montreal, Stuart (Inge) of Barnstaple, England and Arthur (Janine) of Rothesay; eleven grandchildren Lisa White, Jane (Wes) Thoemke, Kirstyn Merrill, Sabrina, Darcy, Richard (Cassie), Gary, Michael, Grace, Arthur and Andrea (Avi) Simmons; five great grandchildren Alexie, Claire, Liam, Imogen and Emily; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Walter, two brothers Cecil and Denis Drayton of North Devon, England. Visitation will be held at Riverview Funeral Home, 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview, NB on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at St. John The Baptist Anglican Church, Woolridge Dr. Riverview, NB. on Thursday February 24, 2011 at 11:00 am with Rev. Brent Ham officiating, assisting him will be the Rev'd Canon Albert Snelgrove. Interment will be at Alderwood Cemetery.
