Obituary of Margo Jane Greenough

Margo Jane Greenough

1942 - 2025

Margo Jane (née McCann) Greenough, 83, passed away peacefully at Monarch Hall on Monday, December 1, 2025, surrounded by family sharing stories, photos, and music she loved. Born and raised in Rolling Dam, NB, a small village near St. Stephen where her family ran the local general store; she was the youngest daughter of the late Marion Evelyn Elizabeth (Williams) McCann and Maurice Carleton McCann. In addition to her parents, Margo was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, J. Geoffrey Greenough.

Margo graduated from UNB with her Bachelor of Nursing and began a career she loved. She worked at Belleville General Hospital, the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John, and later with the Victorian Order of Nurses in both the Saint John and Bathurst areas. She also served on the Board of Directors for VON and volunteered with Theatre New Brunswick.

After she and her husband, Geoffrey, married the week he graduated from university, they lived in Saint John and Bathurst before eventually settling in Moncton. When her children were young, she stepped away from nursing to become a full-time mother though she continued to care for many others along the way, including their beloved “Kosovar daughter,” Ardita Terpeza (Faik) Abazi and many Rotary Youth exchange students.

Margo was a longtime member of Mount Royal United Church and served in various roles over the years. She was also a proud and active member of Beta Sigma Phi for most of her life; its motto life, learning, and friendship reflected her perfectly. She was deeply generous with her time, charitable, and built lasting friendships everywhere she went.

A lifelong learner and adventurer, Margo embraced every opportunity to stay active and connected. She loved to travel, skate, golf, play bridge and badminton, garden, enjoy concerts, theatre, and anything new. She played the piano beautifully and was known to keep parties going with sing-alongs in basements, officers’ messes, and even a hotel penthouse in Chicago. She and Geoff were wonderful dancers who made the most of every moment together.

Her children, J. Richard (Treena) of Halifax, NS, and Sheila Gidney (James) of St. Stephen, NB will dearly miss Margo along with her grandchildren, Travis, Megan, Nolan, Alyssa, and Barrett; and her precious great-grandchildren, Genevieve and Audrey. She is also survived by her brother, Alan (Eileen) McCann; her sister, Keay (late Alan) Halstead; sister-in-law, Patsy Broome Greenough Witzke of Vancouver, BC; nieces Heather Cunningham (Bill Groom), Pamela Halstead, Mary Jayne (Tyler) Roberge, Cathy Halstead (David Wong); nephews James Greenough, Michael and Gregory Witzke; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was a devoted mother grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, and a cherished friend to MANY more.

As requested, there will be no visitation. Interment and a celebration of life will take place in May 2026. For details, please contact Sheila at sheilagidney@gmail.com or 506-467-7571.
