Barry Dickie

Obituary of Barry G. Dickie

As he was quietly slipping away on Feb. 26 at the Moncton Hospital, Barry held hands with his family and wife of 64 years, Patricia, as she softly sang to him.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario he was the son of the late Boyd Dickie and Willah (Sutherland) Dickie.

A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University with degrees in Arts and Education. He was employed as a supervisor with Canada Employment and Immigration. He was retired after 35 years of service. Barry was a member of the St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council and a Faithful Comptroller of the Fourth Degree. He is presently an Honorary Member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus Council # 9270. He was a board of directors’ member and treasurer of the Ray of Hope Needy Kitchen and a past board member of the Moncton Employment and Training Services. In his retirement, he taught Literacy for over 25 years, volunteered at the Riverview Library, and built and maintained an apple orchard. He is a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church.

More than anything, family meant everything to Barry. As the children were growing, he volunteered and was dedicated in supporting their activities in Guides, Scouts, Figure Skating, Hockey, Baseball, and Tennis.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia; daughters Lynne Marie (Frank) Lukeman, of Antigonish, NS; Charlene Dickie, Riverview; Pamela (Bruce) Wilson, Dundas, NB; sons Shane, Moncton and Shawn (Penny-Lynne) Ottawa; sisters Heather Hughes, Dartmouth; and Anne Descheemaekers, Sundre, Alberta; grandchildren Christopher (Ellen) Lukeman, Antigonish, NS; Katherine Durant, Antigonish, NS; David (Kathleen) Lukeman, Stellarton, NS; Braeden and Karissa of Ottawa, ON; and Luke and Ellie of Dundas, NB; great grandchildren Cora, Ruth, Winnie, Ava, Alexis, Annie, Ethan, Rory, Lochlan, and Hudson; as well as several nephews and nieces.

Barry grew up in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, met Pat in Antigonish and started their married life in New Glasgow until his career took him to Moncton, where they have been living in their home for 56 years. With a quiet manner, he had a passion for trees and started an apple orchard upon retirement, personally planting over 500 trees. He was an avid reader, a life-long Montreal Canadians fan, as well as having a life-long interest in weather patterns, particularly upcoming storms. He dearly loved animals.
